Andrew Bain was an esteemed engineer and geologist, and Thomas served his five-year apprenticeship working under Andrew’s supervision and guidance on Michell’s Pass and Bain’s Kloof

South Africans are understandably proud of Christiaan Neethling Barnard (8 November 1922 – 2 September 2001), the first to perform a successful heart transplant on a living human. Nonetheless, whenever I hear of that achievement, i can't help but wonder how many diamond miners, children, and homemakers died to enable Dr. Barnard his achievement.

Eng. Bain is no less guilty. Centuries from now, many might look back on me today and say the same.
